December 23, 2013 Elizabeth New Jersey (NJ.com) — Authorities say a 20-year-old city man faces charges of fatally stabbing a 50-year-old woman that he knew.
Richard Gill was arrested Sunday afternoon and charged with murder, felony murder and burglary for the killing of Sharon Serball in her North Avenue apartment, acting Union County Prosecutor Grace Park said in a statement today.
Police were called to Serball’s apartment about 10 a.m. Saturday, after a relative of Serball found the victim unresponsive on the floor of her bedroom, said Michael Henn, supervisor of the Union County Homicide Task Force.
No details were immediately available this morning on how long Serball had been dead before the relative found her.
Gill was later identified as the suspect and was arrested about 3:30 p.m. Sunday, authorities said. They said Gill and Serball are not related, but they knew each other. No other details were released about how they became acquainted.
Investigators have not yet determined a definitive motive for the killing, Park said in statement.
Gill is being held at the Union County jail in the city on $1 million bail.
Authorities are asking anyone with information about the killing to call police Detective Thomas Koczur at (908) 558-2048 or police Detective James Szpond at (908) 558-2041.
