January 1, 2014 Phoenix, Arizona (AZFamily) — Two people are in custody following a shooting Tuesday afternoon that left a Phoenix police officer and a Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office posse member in critical condition.
Phoenix Police Sgt. Tommy Thompson on Wednesday identified the two suspects as Roger Allen Sharp, 26, and David Lee Murray Jr., 36.
Police said the shooting started with a robbery outside of a restaurant at approximately 2 p.m. Six suspects allegedly robbed a couple at gunpoint outside an IHOP at 44th and Oak streets.
The suspects took off in a maroon Chevy Impala and a police officer began pursuing the vehicle. The driver of the Chevy ran a red light and collided with a white truck in front of a Walgreens at 56th Street and Thomas Road, which is about two miles away from the IHOP.
The driver of the truck got out of his vehicle to help the officer and shots were fired. The officer and truck driver were shot. Witnesses said they heard three to four gunshots.
The officer was shot once in the abdomen and underwent surgery at Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn Medical Center. A person on a ride-along with the officer was not injured.
Thompson said the 34-year-old officer has been with the Phoenix Police Department for seven years.
The sheriff’s office confirmed that the truck driver who was shot is a 63-year-old MCSO posse member.
The victims’ names have not been released. Both remained in critical condition Wednesday.
After the shooting, two black male suspects fled into the neighborhood just south and east of the intersection. Both suspects, now identified as Sharp and Murray, were taken into custody from separate backyards in the area. They are being questioned by police.
Prior to being arrested, police said one of the suspects forced entry into a home. The homeowner was not harmed as the suspect ran through the house.
Thompson said Sharp wrestled the officer’s gun away from him and used it to shoot him and the posse member.
Sharp is facing a variety of charges, including armed robbery, weapons possession, attempted murder, burglary and unlawful flight.
